The Motivation

PILOT SEASON is about planting seeds.  Taking advantage of more face time at higher levels with casting to prove your viability. It’s a pre-screen for the whole year and you can open the doors and raise your stock in the minds of casting more so at this time of year than any other.

With every audition you have, you are given an insanely tight timeline – about 18-24 hours – to be ready to perform at the highest level.  The further you can grow, explore, and develop your characters within the stylistic parameters of the material, the further you will go in the room, and the more consistently you will book.  The actor who shows up ready to collaborate to create interesting and viable character options for the client consistently will audition consistently.

There a huge opportunity out there right now. It’s creating the chance for actors to get ahead of the curve and collaborate further than most.  The calendar and the status quo are creating it.

The opportunity exists because most actors don’t understand the business logic behind stylistic range.   The slight slowdown that the seasonality of our industry is creating right now creates the chance to quickly develop an advantage that will be in play very early in the new year.  Actors who make the most of this time, learning how to identify the stylistic range, and who also take the time to personally explore and master how to play in every show, will be ahead of the game.  They will bring the most advanced, nuanced, explored characters to their auditions, and will get further in the room.

The Pilot Season Intensive is about claiming this opportunity.

Learn to think like the client. Make the absolute most out of your limited audition prep time, and go further in the room.

Create your advantage. Get ahead of the curve and stay there.

Participant Options

There is both practical and theory-based value to this workshop, so actors have a participation option for either:

Seminar Participants  ($170) will be prepared to prepare for the work:

  • Gain the industry, seasonal and personal perspective needed to productively and expertly prepare to collaborate with casting for every audition.
  • Develop a business-driven perspective that will inform choice.
  • Learn exactly what they need to work on in the next few weeks, setting up their pilot season and year.

Active Participants

($395– very limited space)  will put it all in to practice:

  • Work materials on camera each day, and
  • Be guided through their personal adjustment to style and making it work on camera.
  • Develop a personal practical ownership of the styles of each network.
  • All acting work is filmed provided for download and review.

The Format

Day One
10am-6pm with Jeb Beach

An overview of the Entertainment Industry, and how it’s present state of change is creating opportunities and changing how we need to play the game. We’ll cut through the flash and get to the simple truth of what the business is all about – ENGAGEMENT.

Understanding how it really works is the basis for identifying the BUSINESS parameters that guide artistic choice.

Understanding where it’s GOING will make clear how to be ready for the opportunity that always comes with change.

On Camera, we’ll start with laying the foundation for creating engaging auditions by crafting and inhabiting range, absent of stylistic parameters   Simply preparing natural, engaging work as the foundation for what’s to come.

Day Two
10am-6pm with Jeb Beach

Agents, Casting, and Actors have the same Client:  The Network.  The better we meet the needs of the client, the more we will work.  Learn how to identify the needs of the network to guide your work.

Categorize the Networks based on clearly identifiable characteristics which will guide your artistic exploration.

Now it starts to get fun and a little silly.

In addition to understanding what they are and why, we now begin to play from style to style to style. Network to Network.  Actors’ personal barriers to entry are going to pop up.  We’ll get past each actor’s cliched understanding of the style and open up their personal play space within that style.

We’ll also provide detailed notes and review of all the shows that are known to be shooting this season in your Pilot Season Handbook, and practice predicting and adjusting to those shows – so you know how you fit before the audition ever arrives.

Day Three
10am-4pm with Wesley Salter

Pilot Season is your Pre-Screen for the whole year.”

As a former Associate Casting Director, Wesley has had the opportunity to actually work on a Casting Team doing ‘BIG Network’ casting searches and knows what makes him remember ‘actors’ work in pilot season, and look to invite them back into the room throughout the year.

Make no mistake, that’s the real and all to often missed value of Pilot Season: ‘winning’ the room for the rest of the year.

For the first part of Day Three:

i) Understanding the Casting process • understanding the process from start to finish

ii) Authentic Voice • what is it? How does it play into your process & audition prep?

iii) Winning The Room • On-camera Audition Technique (Principal Role Auditions):  Understanding the “Bookable Moments” that are on the page & discovering the “Bookable Moments” that aren’t on the page, and learning how to nail the technical aspects of your audition so that your performance stands out.

For the second part of Day Three:

Finally, the workshop will wrap up with Business Hours (https://jebbeach.com/business-hours/)  A candid group Q & A, where you the actor, have the opportuntity to discuss where you’re at currently and where you would like to get to over the next year with your goals . Wesley will review the state of each Active Participant’s career, marketing materials, and provide guidance as to what the crucial next steps are to set up for success and growth in 2018.  Each participant will have the opportunity to ask those burning ‘industry’ questions that have been lurking in the back of their mind.
